WES Third Graders Learn on the Move!

Students work on projects at table

There are two things that really make learning exciting and fun, hands on activities and learning on the move. Third grade students at Watauga Elementary experienced both of those as they learned about economics with a simulated Kids’ Marketplace event. Students were given a career, a salary, and a list of wants and needs. They had to travel to different stations and make purchases for needs such as housing, healthcare, and food as well as some wants such as entertainment and charities. The students learned to budget their money while making economic choices and experiencing opportunity cost. They were required to put a portion of their money into a savings account, and some learned that money came in handy when they had to return to the bank to make withdrawals for necessary expenses. It was a fun, real-life learning activity that makes learning relevant.
