WES Students Build Skyscraper

Students work in floor to build model skyscrapper

Third graders at Watauga Elementary recently discussed a nonfiction book called Sky Boys. For those unfamiliar with the book, it tells the story of the building of the Empire State Building. The class then conducted a Google search, looking at images of the famous building and how it towers high above the ground. Inspired by the architectural marvel, students then worked in teams to build their own towers with index cards. The rules were simple, use nothing but the cards, and do whatever you like with the cards such as tearing or bending. The designs were as different as the teams. Through trial and error, aka problem solving, each team was able to successfully build a freestanding tower. Measurements were taken to see which team built the tallest tower, but everyone was a winner in this challenge. Maybe this bunch of learners will grow up to be architects of the next tallest skyscraper in the world!
