Experiencing the Arts Locally

On Friday, March 2, third grade students from Watauga Elementary School visited the William King Arts Center to experience culture through the arts first hand. Students learned about ancient Mali through a lesson taught inside a mud hut. They learned about the culture and economy of ancient Mali as well as how the natural resources of Mali impacted where towns and trade routes developed. After learning that most of Mali’s communication and history was passed down by storytellers, students were able to create their own mud cloths as a keepsake and reminder of the earliest form of Mali’s written language. Students then went on a tour of the museum displays where they learned about our local coal mining heritage, how fashion has influenced society, and how art is often inspired by sites and scenes found all across the state of Virginia.
